John A. Knight

John Knight is Principal Geologist of Phoenix Mining Consultants Ltd., responsible for the geological input to all our projects. He has wide experience of the provision of geological services to the mining industry and in project evaluation and development, particularly in Latin America, Africa and the CIS. He is a fluent Spanish speaker.

With over 40 years’ experience of working in and consulting to the mining and extractive industries, this ranges from the design and management of exploration projects to the leadership of multidisciplinary teams for the preparation of mining sector investment studies, due diligence and risk assessment reporting. This experience embraces a wide range of mineral commodities from stratiform deposits (including coal, lignite and phosphate) to the gamut of base and precious metals in a variety of hard-rock and strata-bound mining environments. His experience also covers the management of environmental permitting and social and community relations for mine development and oil industry pipeline projects in Latin America and Eastern Europe.

In his scope as consulting geologist, much of his more recent work has related to geological due diligence and the reporting of resources and reserves as Competent Person for compliance with the recognised international reporting codes such as the JORC Code. Numerous projects in the CIS have required restatement of reserves assessed under the CIS system of reporting into resources and reserves compliant with international practice.

John was awarded his Ph.D. (1975) at the University of Sheffield, covering a stratigraphical and structural study of an operating coalfield in Northern Spain, leading to his employment for a number of years as mining geologist in Spain. After working for some years in the British coal industry he moved into mining consultancy, undertaking substantial project management assignments in Africa, Latin America and subsequently in the CIS. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, a Chartered Geologist and registered as a European Geologist.
